What is e-invoicing?

April 16, 2024

Simply put, e-invoicing is the digital exchange of invoices between businesses and their clients or suppliers, replacing traditional paper-based processes. It’s much more than just sending PDFs back and forth by email though. E-invoicing relies on structured data in an agreed, machine-readable way with a clear syntax. Standards help organizations automate the processing of these documents. That’s why it’s more than just a trend; e-invoicing is becoming a necessity. In the EU, for instance, public procurement now requires e-invoicing using the European Norm EN-16931, supported by the PEPPOL network. And more countries around the world are shifting towards Continuous Transaction Control (CTC), making e-invoicing mandatory even for Business-to-business transactions. France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Romania—the list goes on… by 2030, it’s expected that all EU countries will adopt the B2B e-invoicing standard. This means staying ahead of e-invoicing regulations isn't just smart—it's essential for navigating an evolving landscape in international business.
